Hello my fellow monster keepers :D So i got a small GT in Jan of this year, it is a male and was just 1.5 to 2 inch back then. It never allowed any tankmates, nipped on my oscar and we had to relocate it, same goes for my plecos. So from feb it has stayed all alone like a king. It is in a 2.5 foot long 35 gallons aquarium and has stayed in it for the past 11 months without having any issues(thankfully). It has no health issues, the fish is very healthy, eats well and plays around as well. It was very shy in the beginning but now it's very friendly. Months have passed and my GT is now 6 inches in length, it's quite bulky(eats a lot) as well and as always healthy. I have decided to relocate it as the aquarium is obviously small for it. I am gonna get a 4 foot long 90 gallon aquarium decorated with driftwood, plants and some hiding places all for itself. I plan to get it this week. I will also be getting it a new filter. My question is how do i go about the relocating? Will it get adjusted to the new filter without any issues?to the water? It has lived very happily in its old home but it is now quite small for it so i have to relocate it. Also i have read male GTs can reach a length of 12 inches! Considering all this i have decided to change the aquarium but now i am confused about it getting adjusted. Is there any procedure i have to follow? Any help would be appreciated.

Hook up the old filter to the new tank along with the new filter. Otherwise you're goin to have to recycle the new tank.

Are you going to be moving all your stuff from the 30 to the 90?

All in all the gt should adjust fine. It might take a few days to get comfortable but that should be about it. It's best to get it to eat as quickly as possible in the new tank. Food makes most fish comfortable in new homes. I've had plenty of gts get thrown into new tanks and just take over especially males.

I am not moving anything from the old tank as i want to give a fresh look to the new tank! So it will just be the fish! new decor and new gravel ! This is has been my first experience with the GTs and i have to say they are very hardy fish!I would recommend them for starters IF you want to keep a single beautiful cichlid coz they get nasty with team mates haha!..so i guess i just set up the tank...run the old filter then move the fish and run the new filter?right? for how long do i need to run the old filter along with the new filter? When can i remove the old filter permanently ? And yeah i will be using the same water source which i have been using for the past 11 months! with 50 % water changes done every 20 days!

since your not moving anything just move the old filter media to the new filter or just the whole filter let it run for atleast a week or so.till the new filter can build up bb.

A lot of people may not prefer to do this but clean off your old media from the running filter in the new tank and water. This will visibly dirty the water but when the dust settles your new filter will be seeded. I've done this myself a dozen times. It works flawlessly.

I can vouch for this too.

That's actually not a bad idea.

Thanks :D i guess i will do this then! However i have a small doubt, when you say clean off the running filter in the new tank you mean squeeze the sponge of the old filter in the new tank water right? i am sure that will dirty the water and transfer the beneficial bacteria however do i need to completely squeeze it or just one or two times and should the fish be already in? or after i squeeze i will let the new filter to run and then transfer the fish ?
