Removal of hormones by filtration?

So, part of the reason we do water changes is supposedly because fish excrete a hormone that can inhibit their growth.
Is there a way to remove this hormone by filtration as well as by water changes? Will carbon do it?

I've always wondered this myself (since i normally have carbon in my tanks),... so would be good to hear peoples input on this...

Carbon will clear hormones from the water but needs to be renewed often to be effective at it. Not all species excrete growth inhibitors though. What species were you thinking of that do this?
