Ok in planning my tank setup some time this summer I am planning to upgrade my filter with a diy sump... So my question is, is there any filter media or anything I can ad to remove nitrates? I know plants do a good job and that's the main reason we do w/c but is there anything else? I read somewhere anaerobic bacteria can remove it so a nitrate filter one that's big enough to eat up all the O2 in the water works but I don't have an area for one of these... So is there a media or maybe a deep sand bed that the water has to pass thru

Nitrate filters can work but are a little finicky and need slot of adjustments.

For the money a drip system would be a better investment and also eliminates the wc's.

why dont you just make a algae scrubber? it will help a lot with nitrates

you could just hang it on the side of the tank, but when he says drip system its basically stating that your dripping water into the tank as a drip system. The water entering the tank is very minimal as in a few drips a second but add up to a lot as in 20 gallons a day. This way the water is always being replenished and waste water is also exiting through a overflow system.

Ok I figured out how I can do a algae scrubber... Well in my head I did. Also drip system could work because where my tank is I have a little water line hook up so how much wc on a 200 gallon a day is needed in a drip system? I guess it all depends on bio load

Purigen removes nitrites. I've noticed a great reduction since adding it to my system. It's like the new and improved carbon, works way better and you can regenerate it when it exhausts.

Minimal impact on trace elements, but will remove medications
