This is my male & one of my female festae .. I thought he had paired with one of my featae but eventually he killed her time after time she would go to his side & seemed as if she couldn't find her way back to her side so after about 2 months of putting her back I just left them be .... didn't end well .. so now I have another female & she is colored up but I'm skeptical about letting her over the first encounter he chased her around for quite some time. He looks to be trying to attack her now but Something is telling me to give them a try.. any advice would be appreciated...

Video very short & iPhone camera is terrible but .. it's all I have lol .. thanks

It looks like he is a little bit bigger than her, could you possibly make a hole only she can get through in the divider? That's usually the best way to let them do their thing, while allowing her to escape when she needs to.

If you aren't opposed to the look of the divider, I know a lot of people let them spawn through the grate. The hatch isn't quite as good but you will still end up with more fry than you are likely to have an outlet for. The escape hole is the next best option. If you are wanting them to live together as a pair removing the divider is a risk you will have to take at some point, but I would wait until she is choosing to stay on his side.

Yea it's actually a hole in the center that she can get through .. she went through it once when I first put her in & he beat her up & she didn't go back .. I will try another one near the glass

As stated, your best bet is to cut holes in the divider big enough for the female to get through. Make sure to cut at lease three holes in the divider at different levels. This prevents her from being pinned in any one area. Remember that disaster usually strikes when you aren't watching. Leave the divider up....EVEN if it looks like they are getting along. I've see a lot of these bruisers go through something that I can only describe as post partum depressions....with either male or female kicking the crap out of each other once fry are born. What I think is happening is that the urge to protect the fry overrides any pair bonding...with one looking at the other as a threat.

And as stated....they CAN breed right through the divider. It's the only time you can lend credence to the axiom of "getting pregnant in a swimming pool."

what I do is wait till the female has dropped her tube and is already looking for a site to spawn. i would pull up the divider midway and throw in a couple of dither fishes, usually plecos as they are harder. i will observe over the next couple of hours.
