Hey guys, been a while.

I have no more monster tanks, just a simple 40 gallon with some Blue acara's. Had to downsize, looking to get into the game again soon.

Anyways, Its a nice planted tank. I was thinking of removing the top trim.

Bad idea? I want to do an over head hanging LED and have the reflection light up the room. Not to mention rimless looks awesome...

Lets hear it.

Ive done some reading on this a while back, and if i recall correctly, it could/does generally work, but the trim aids in the support of the aquarium (and the glass is likely thinner than optimal due to this added safety factor). Also probably depends on the size/height of the tank you are removing trim from.

also, the glass under the trim probably needs to be buffed/polished so it doesn't cut the crap out of you.

Hope that helps at least a little, and someone who has actually done it chimes in.

Might also help to know its a bow front.

Perhaps I could heat up some clear mold of some type and make my own trim if its a structural issue..

if the glass is sharp im sure some 600 grit would smooth it out or even a clear silicone bead to cover it.

I would personally not remove the trim from a bow front style tank.
