My husband and I are in the midst of building our outdoor pond. We have only lived in Fl. for 2 years, and have never had a pond here with fish. All our ponds with fish were in NY. I don't know how familiar anyone is with keeping a pond in Fl. but with the increase in hurricanes here, I am not so sure we should put in fish. Anyone have any suggestions?

dont be rediculous i live in florida and have 5 ponds and all of them have survived the storms:D if you want to kepp your fish in the pond all you have to do is put mesh or chainlink over the entire pond and they will be fine do you live in a low lying area?

I wouldn't say we live in a low lying area, and fortunately we aren't right on top of the beach or the intracostal. I never thought of the chainlink idea, that is a really great idea, thank you. It's funny since my husband and I own a fencing and landscaping company, I have a ton of chainlink sitting in my yard right now. I was going to throw it out since it isn't enough to do anything with, but my husband insisted we save it. Now, I am glad I did. (I just wont tell him that. I can't let him think he was right:grinno: )

Hmmm, seems to me that the pond would be the safest place for fish. I am unsure of why a hurricane would affect your fish. I am a 40yo florida native and have seen my share of hurricanes. The only problem would be escape due to flooding, but if your neigborhood does not have a history of flooding, there is nothing to worry about. Since Florida is mostly sand, natural drainage is pretty good here. I never had any flooding problems because of the sand. None of my fish blew away either

florida has alot of native you can keep if you get a hurricane they will just be swept away back to there environment :)

lucky you live in florida

lots of native pbass and gars:naughty:

among other tropical non native ]V[ONSTERS! :naughty:
I bet you that there are alot of nonnatives down there to because of idiots releasing fish.

You got that right !!!

And PBass are NOT native, they're immigrants !

What do you do about aeration & filtration if you don't have power for 2wks... natives don't suck air like gold fish.

If nothing else the chain link will keep the herons out.

How about keeping TURTLES, the have their own shelter!:grinyes:
