I just moved the whole family of fish I have from a 29 gallon into a 55 gallon using completely recycled water from my 220 as well as keeping the filter material and gravel from the 29. Looks good so far, I have the father jaguar divided from mom and the fry, in about 3/4ths of the tank. My question is when will the fry be able to fend for themselves, mostly in regard to eating. They are about a week old now and the mother still seems very involved with them. I want to put the mother back with the father as soon as possible, (I was thinking this coming friday) but I don't want it to be at the cost of the fry. I assume it would be safe but my assumptions don't always pan out. Any ideas? Also does anyone have any idea what the growth rate is for these guys? For the sake of example, how long would it take them to reach 1 inch? Thanks.

Awesome thanks guys. They are Jag x Convicts Chris, it's their first batch and they seem to be doing a good job parenting. I'll throw her back over Friday then. I appreciate it.

I might've mentioned this on another thread. Forgive me for repeating myself, but from my experience in breeding flowerhorns & convicts, the eggs & frys really don't need their parents. Once you've determined that the eggs have been fertilized, the parents can be removed from the tank.

I remove the eggs once I see black dots on the eggs which means they've been successfully fertilized. With the use of an air stone to help fan the eggs and without any predators to eat them, they pretty much raise themselves.

I'd love to be able to see the parents raise them, but for the same reason you removed your male for fear of him eating the frys, I remove both parents. Better safe than sorry.
