I treated my fish to a new fx5 it should be arriving in a few days i have a few questions..... 1st off how long should i run both the new and old filters together. 2how do you remove the internal filter 3 i have messy fish what media would you use in the fx5 i have 1000 grams of bio rings and some carbon with some fine pads... Would this work and were should i put each stage..... Sorry for all the questions but looking forward to hearing the answers!

I would personally run the old and new together for at least two weeks, but it all depends on how fast you can get that new filter seeded too. To speed things up you could use Seachem Stability, squeeze out the old filter media into the FX5 or even move some old sponges or floss over to the FX5. I usually just use old media to seed the new filter, but I have used Stability recently to give my Rena a bump. Now if by internal filter you mean undergravel, then I would just pull it out and then pull a 50% water change and start up the FX5 with Seachem Stability using the new tank directions.
There are a ton of threads here on the FX5, I would just try a search and look through them. There threads on what media people have used, what order to put them in, modifications people have done on the FX5, etc. Just take a couple hours and look through them.

Thanks for your reply...... I have read a few and choose the media from that was just wondering if that would be enough really..... Its not an under gravel filter its a sponge filter that sits a black box that takes up a huge part of the tank... I think it is stuck on with silicon i have read a few places that you can get it off with a Stanley knife but was wondering if there is a better way of removing.
All depends on how much silicone it has between it and the glass. If you have thick silicone you might be able to get a dinner knife in between and separate it off that way and then use a razor blade to scrape the silicone off the glass. If you can't do that you may have to razor blade it little by little.
right, I am removing my internal filter tomorrow, its been running along side my fx5 now for just under 3 weeks, any tips befor i start.
I plan on removing all my decorations turning off all the filters and removing 50 % of the water, is this the right thing to do or should I leave the wood and fake plants in there so the fish still have a place to hide? any other tips would be greatly appreciated
