Just as the title states, I was thinking about removing the overflows and changing the filtration on my 120g and I wanted to seek a little bit of help. There's nothing really wrong with the sump, the dual overflows just take up a lot of space and don't exactly look very nice (they're covered in BBA and it's not very easy to get off).

My main concern was capping the holes after I remove all the tubing and the overflows. Could I just put some bulkheads in the holes and cap them off? That seems like the best option, but if anyone else has a better idea I'd love to hear it.

As for the replacement filtration, my plan was to have 1 canister filter (probably either an eheim 2217 or a rena filstar xp4) and two large HOB (either marineland emperor 400 or marineland penguin 350). I would start using the canister before removing the sump, that way it would take in some of the BB and prevent a recycling after I removed the sump. Then, I would put on the HOBs. How does that sound?

Also, I'm guessing removing the overflows just requires a razor blade and some elbow grease? If there's another way, feel free to let me know.

Thanks for reading, I look forward to any advice.

Forgot to mention, I may also get an fx5 for the canister filter if I have enough money at the time.

If it is a glass tank, they should come out with some razor blades and a bit of guitar string. Be careful not to get into the main seams when removing it.

Using bulkheads and capping them will work just fine. You could also hard plumb the FX5 into the bulkheads should you wish.

Yeah, avoiding the main seams was my largest concern. I actually have a few guitar strings I could use, so that's convenient.

I'lll look into plumbing the fx5 into the bulkheads, sounds like an interesting option.

Thanks for your help, that answers most of my questions.

i wanna take my overflow box out too but im way to lazy to drain the whole tank and saw it off since its a acrylic tank...
