My tap water grows diatoms like nuts when I use it for water changes. I want to remove the silicate from it so that it does not.
I've had it tested for phosphate by the LFS and I'm told it has none, so I'm assuming its just excess silicates.
How can I remove silicates? I know phosguard is supposed to, but is it cost effective? How can I make a tap water filter that would provide enough contact time with the media to effectively remove silicates at high flow rates?
2 liters of phosguard from bigals is $28. The question is, how long would it last removing silicate from 30 gallons of well water per week?
