Hi, I had to go on vacations and left my tank with my aunt. she only had room to put it right under a window so algae forms like crazy. And thus, the snails had a boom and now she says there are over 200. So how can i tell her to kill some snails without hurting the others? I had heard about something with a potato i think. How does that work?

get a assasin snal ship it to her house and have her add i to the tank actaully get a few

You could start by taking the tank out of direct sunlight. Then make sure the fish are eating and there is any leaving any uneaten food. Then put a piece of lettuce in the tank at night. And in the morning it'll be covered in snails, pull out the lettuce and continue this until the snail population is under control.

yeah the problem is i live in argentina and im quite sure you cant find those there.. Will bigger snails attack smaller snail? I can get bigger white snails but theyre not assasins.

Yeah.. the thing is she cant remove it from the spot under the window. its the only spot. I asked her to put a black paper all around the tank exept the front so she can watch them. I guess this will control the algea a bit more. And the tank is quite heavily planted so the plants will end up eliminating the algae(if the snail havent ate all the plants already). Also, ill tell her to lower the amount of food given.

@citrinellus
That must be it. It was a piece of lettuce not a potato. Ill ask her to do that also to help control it.

So do you think reducing the direct sunlight and food given and the lettuce method would get it under control. I dont mind having 20 snails, but 200 like she said is a bit too much.

Clown loaches eat them like candy :) I keep my baby loaches with my discus who have snails from their plants.

i had the same problem with snails and could never get them under control. i used had a snail while fish were in tank with no luck i used it without any fish in the tank with no luck i tried lettuce only thing i never tried cause the fish i had in there were way bigger was to use puffer fish or loachs as both will eat them up. then i did several water changes and gravel cleanings and thought id finally beat them then 2 days later they were everywhere again. this is in a 150 gallon tank so i gave up and just put my fish that had out grown there other tank in there and there all still on live food trying to get them off it but thats another battle any how the goldfish feeders must be eating the crap out of those lil suckers as i havent seen a single one in a week. not saying it will work for u but its workin for me

Don't add clown loaches unless it's a larger tank. Usually cutting back on feeding, doing more gravel vacs and baiting them with lettuce will greatly reduce your numbers. You could also get some sort of small pleco that ate the algae as well. That would help cut out their food source.
