just curious. i just about a 125 gallon aquarium which came with rena xp3. is this a decent canister filter or is it a POS?

they seem pretty nice. it seems to me that eheim is the best, but i simply dont have the 400 bucks to blow. so what do you think? which canister is going to be the best for my money? rena? marineland c-seires? fluval?

If you are not going to get an Eheim, then use the Rena, and
fill it with Eheim media, and you'll have the next best thing...
1 tray of EfiMech pre-filter media, and
2 trays of EfiSubsrat Pro, and a floss pad...
There is no By-Pass on the Renas which makes them very efficient, ALL the water has to pass through the media and get filtered...;) :D

okay, so eheim filters are easily the best. just too expensive for a college student who saute's at TGI Friday's. so between rena, fluval, and marineland canisters, are you saying rena is definitely the best one? i've got six tanks, i'd like to replace all my penguin 350s with good canisters now that i'm really getting into this stuff.

by the way, i'm referring to the marineland c-series canisters. i've always really liked marineland's stuff but really, i'm getting into big tank territory with the 90 and the 125 so it's time to step up. i mean, the c-series is the only decent canister they make, and HOB filters aren't going to do it. also, i've got six penguin 350s, each with four cartridges in them already. that's really goddamn expensive. i am literally throwing money away every month.

so, again, since i can't afford eheim, which canister is the best, and if not the rena, where on the scale is the rena? it is my understanding that rena is somehow linked to API, and everyone seems to hate api?

so eheim filters are easily the best

I much prefer my Rena XP3's to my eheim classic 2215 that I had.

more powerful, easier to set up, self priming, quiet, built in quick disconnects, two output options (powerjet nozzle OR spraybar) etc.

it was a no brainer. the XP3 was easily better.

not all eheims are better than rena's.

sure, some of the expensive designs probably blow the rena's out of the water. but then we are comparing apples to oranges.

I think most people on here would probably do the
Fluval FX5 over the RENA XP3 or 4,

...but if they were thinking Fluval 305 or 405 class, then they'd go for the RENA XP3 or 4.

Still, no mater what model or make you choose, Eheim media WILL still bring them up a notch...

The point that gives the RENA the stock class edge is the "no-bypass" feature.

There are too many good deals out there to forget about the "used" market too...There is always somebody getting out of the hobby and the components are still sound, with alot of usable hours in them...

you can always build a DIY sump wet/dry filter for the cost of a new canister with money left over and have more filtration capacity to boot!

IMO, you can't go wrong with Rena or Fluval. I don't know a lot about any other brand. If you take your time, you can find some really good deals out there.

The 125 I bought mid last month came with an XP3 as well. I REALLY like it. Quiet, and efficient. As someone stated above though, get some better media for it though.

The XP3 is only the first of 3 filters I will have on that tank. I plan on putting a Eheim 2229 Wet/Dry Canister, and a Fluval G6 on it as well. YES, I know what some people say about the G3 & G6, overpriced, low GPH, blah blah blah, but I have the money to waist on it and I am one of those "have to have the latest gadgets" guys. :p

If money is a little tight, I would stick with purchasing more Rena's. For the price, they are great I think.

okay, so i DO have the bio-chem stars and the rena polishing pads. i might buy a better microfilter though. and i also have the bio-chem zorb, and thats cool, but the pouches fit 55 gallons, so 2 isn't enough, and 3 is too much. is having 3 perfectly safe?

also, it's probably cheaper to buy the carbon in a jug or carton than in pouches, so which brand is 'best'? or are they all kinda the same? it's just, that now i'm getting into serious filtration/giant tank territory, i really want to make sure this thing is the best goddamn filter it can be.
