I decided to upgrade my filteration and go with my first canister. I am getting an XP2 today and had as question. Along with the foam pads and carbon it comes with what else do I need to buy to add to the filter baskets? Or I guess What do you put in there? I am looking to add it to my 120 gallon ca/sa tank so no special requirements. I was thinking of stuffing more bio media in there but wanted some suggestions.

Hey, I used Seachem Matrix in mine, has worked very well for me.
The carbon isn't really needed IMO, some filter floss or non fire retardend polyester pillow stuffing makes a great polishing media but it needs cleaned weekly, same stuff as that little white pad but cheaper.

If you can, return it and get the XP3, the extra media space really makes a difference.

In the bottom basket use the sponges, in the top basket, use as much biomedia as you can stuff in there. I used biomax in my XP, it works great for me.

ditch the carbon and make room for more bio media:)

Welcome to the xP CLUB!!!
For a 120, I would buy the xP3...It's only $10-25 more than the xP2 model.....Here's your basic setup, from bottom to top...Bottom level is for the sponges....Middle level is for the Bio-Stars....I like to use the less expensive Fluval Bio-Rings(http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp18404/si1378702/cl0/fluvalbiomaxrings115oz) in the middle and top areas....

(Secret:Ultimate Biological-Canister Filter)---->You can fill the xP's with just crushed coral and snails.....<---(shshsh)

Well I ended up getting the xp2 I actually added it to my 55 gallon. Now I have 2 penguin bio wheels and the xp2. It has been running for 24 hours now and can already tell the difference. I am going to pick up an xp3 to add to my 120 gallon soon. I really just wanted to say thanks I actually figured out what I could put in it after I got the thing home. Oh I printed the online price out from petsmart and took it in and got a steal I got it for 79.99 reg priced at 139.99 in store. Couldnt be more happy right now.

Its no use trying to keep it secret, the word is out on snails in cannisters....Be aware that some snails are intermediate hosts for some internal parasites. Do your homework before using them.
