I got a used rena xp3. In my middle basket I was going to use fluval ceramic rings. My LFS guy said to try to the blue bio-balls. What do you think? can I mix some of them?

If your tank is already stable then there is no need, but if you want more bio then cermics would offer more surface area for bacteria. Say if you added another fish and started feeding heavier i would suggest switching them out yes.
They will still act as a bio filter, they are just so much more effective in wetdrys and ceramics are SOOO much more effective in sumps or canisters
