I have this rena xp3 laying around that came with my 125 gallon when I bought it. I have an FX5 and sponge filters running the 125, I WAS going to hook the XP3 up for extra filtration, but...

I was in a LFS today and they had a good deal on a 33 gallon. I've been looking for a long, low tank for a while now. All my fish in my 20 are going to get moved into the 33 (tiger barbs and polka dot loaches).

So, is a filter rated at 350gph just too much flow for a 33 gallon? I know the attitude around here is you can never have too much filtration, but it just seems pretty beast. I don't want my fish blown up against the opposite wall of the tank from the output. :grinno:

I have an XP3 on a 20 long with no problems and none of the fish seem to mind. I had the spray bar on it when it was fresh and took it off when i switched to salt.

It should be just fine on a 33

I don't have the spray bar, but I will look in to getting one. Thanks guys. It's a 4 foot long tank so I think if it is alright on a 20 long it will be totally fine.

Totally Fine.

I have a magnum HOT on my 2foot 20gal. Doesn't seem to bother anything. I think an xp3 on a 33 would be fine. Do you have the flow-control valve for the output? I have an xp3 hooked up to my 65 and I think once I put fish in it I'll need to tone down the output a little bit with that valve...

I wouldnt even worry about the spray bar if its a 4 foot tank. You should see how it is before worrying about getting one.

It should be fine on a 65 with no restriction. I actually think the XP3 is a great filter for a tank that size that isnt really overstocked.

Thanks all for the input. I am going to hook it up and see how it goes.

The other issue is the only place for the canister is a bit behind and lower than the tank on a counter... the tank is on my kitchen bar counter. It is only a bit over a foot lower than the lip of the tank.

Is this going to be an issue? The input hose would probably have to be cut down to about a foot long.
