Bought a Rena xp3 today for 60 bucks, not a bad deal. It works but I just ordered a gasket kit for peace of mind. The spray bar is to long to fit in my tank sideways so I am going to make one. Is the best bet making one to spray from one side of the tank to the other so it'd be about a foot long (my tank is a 55) or would I make one that is approximately 4ft long to spray back to front. Also, do I need a powerhead?

Xp3 with a nice power head would be a good combo imo, just run ceramic media and mechanical black filter pads in the rena, I had the xp4, sometimes its tricky to get primed without air inside the can, so make sure all hoses and fittings are tight! I would put the intake on one end and the power head on the opposite side so it blows the poo into the filter! With a good circulator a spray bar isn't necessary! Here's one I use maybe go with the 1050, awesome site too!

Free s&h on orders 49.99 and up, ph is 44.99 so buy some food or testing supplies! http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=23592

So if I don't use the spraybar do I just let pump water in with it's outlet minus the spraybar? For powerhead placement, does it need to be high in the tank, or low, or like the same level as the intake. It has the pads in the bottom tray it came with, and it had ceramic media in the second, I ordered more seachem matrix to top off the second tray. Also ordered finer pads for the top, do you recommend not using them?

Finer pads mean you'll have to clean it more, but your water will be more clear.

Put all the pads in tray 1

All the bio in 2 & 3

All my circulators are mounted 2/3 to the top, about 8" below water line, here's one of my tanks, ph left and filter intake right

with pool filter sand I have never vacuumed the tank and water is top notch even tho its "blackwater"

Like I said with good water movement a spray bar is unnecessary, but I prefer high flow (gph) in all my tanks so a circulator and good filter is adequate!

The hydor korillia line are very good, low power consumption and great flow! At petsmart or petco you would pay 50-60$ for an aqueon that isn't even close in performance, you will learn buying online is much more economical!

Check out my pothos thread below for info on a cheap 5-10$ plant that needs no added light or fertz to grow and consumes nitrates (bi product of fish waste that is traditionally removed thru water changes)

Do I orient the power head towards the substrate? Also where is your filter output I couldn't see it in the picture. I am still considering a spray bar for a stream style flow as some of the fish I will be keeping like that. If I do that spray bar and power head should flow towards the intake right.

Intake is on opposite side of circulator.

Id have the spray bar go the length of the tank and put the circulator and intake on opposite ends.

My circulator:

Cool thing about the hydor korillia series is they mount magnetically, I've always had bad experiences with suction cups failing and my ph blowing around. Also they only consume 5watts of energy, that's almost less then a bubbler!

Thanks, I bought a korillia today but it was to small. I forgot which one you said and didn't have my phone on me. They sold me a nano one that was like 450gph. It blows water but not really enough to move the junk on the bottom around. Going to exchange it tomorrow along with the eheim jager heater I bought. I bought a 300w and it was to big to fit properly in my tank going to look for a smaller one tomorrow.

Wow yeah the 1050 is what i suggested, and a jager 200watt is fine, you can always mount it horizontally, yeah its a beast. Are you doing this at ur lfs? Cuz online you can buy both for 60$ with free shipping!
