kennesaw, ga
which canister do you guys prefer? im looking to add a canister to my 2 AC70s on my 55g. i've heard great things about both and wanna know which is the best for the price. also i heard that the xp3 doesn't come with as good of filter material as the 2217

I run xp3 filters but they are set up with the same media and in the same manner as the eheims Cost wise, if you include the media you would need to buy to add to the XP3, is about the same. The eheim is probably better quality, but the xp3 is easier to clean and has more gph.

Never used the E's, and some will say they are the best. I don't know.
For my money, I'd take the XP. I have 2 XP2's and think they are great.
Someone would have to give me an E comparable to the XP in size and gph before I would spend the money for one. That's provided the E did enough of a better job to warrant the extra cost.

Never messed with the Eheims....Always was a FLuval person since the early 90's...Now, I use FliStars Xp3 models on all my setups....I too use Aqua Clear power filters for mechanical filtration.....LOve the combo and will stick with it...ANything better, with my small budget in mind, will be a homemade wet/dry sump setup....

I have a 2217 and I don't find it any harder to clean than my fluvals and eheim pro2. I put the ehfimech and ehfisubs in nylon bags so they're easier to handle. It probably takes me about 5 min to clean the whole canister with most of it just rinsing the filter pads. The great thing about the eheim classics design is that there's no chance of bypass and it's also very quiet. I can't say anything about the xp3 since I've never tried one.

I have owned both and preferred the XP3 for the following reasons:

1. more flow rate (more powerful)
2. just as much if not more media capacity
3. two available outlet options (spray bar or powerjet) included.
4. much easier to prime (fill with water and simply plug it in)
5. has quick disconnect valves. (the eheim does not).

now, if you are comparing the XP3 to much more expensive eheims, well, thats probably a different story.

but at least in my experience with these two particular filters, the rena wins hands down. :)
