I was looking for a new canister filter for my living room tank because I don't like the idea of a sump in the living room.

And I seen that XP4's are about $150+ship on ebay. And they have a listed flow of 450GPH.

BUT then i read that filled with media they only flow 190GPH. :irked:

So is this true

450gph listed flow rate but only 190GPH once filled?

Just get an XP3. For the price difference, the flow isn't that improved.

IMO, an XP3 is good for up to 100G, but no more.

How big is the tank your putting this filter on?

I have a certain turn over rate I am shooting for and a thin wallet. LOL Or I would just get a fx5.

I can't seem to find what a loaded XP3 flows. Does anyone know?

It all in the planning stage right now. I have a fish that needs a upgraded tank. But its going to be something 4' so 75,90,110 or 72 corner.

I have allways like having really high turn over rates. For the past 5yrs I have tried to set up all my tanks with 10-15x turn over rates. I like not having any visible debris in the tank and not having to vacumm is a plus as well. For me 10-15x keeps most or all of the debris off the floor of the tank.

To be honest, with a 75, you're not going to get that kind of turnover using an XP3 or even an XP4. If you are shooting for 10-15x, go ahead and just save for the FX5. You could also just try and grab a used one for sale.

Yea I just got happy when i seen new 450gph canisters for 150 bucks. Until i found out about the flow drop to 190gph.

I was going to use a xp4 and a pair of emperor 400's.

If I remember correctly, just throwing this out there, but I think the XP3 aren't too far away from the XP4s when you get media in them. The only benefit is added media space, which isn't really needed, IMO.

I don't know if I agree on the XP4 not being much of an upgrade over the XP3. I noticed a considerable difference between the flow from my XP4 versus my XP3. However, I still plan to use it plus another filter on my 75G/90G tank.

When you look at the difference in price, it negates the extra flow.
