Hi my Rene smart heater fell down few days back dunno how long it was down for . My big female ray as now a burn mark under her disc so looks like she sat on it. So all Iam saying is even smart heaters are not ray safe if it falls of tank side .

my angels lay eggs on mine continuesly. plus my rays are all the time on it with no ill effects or burns what so ever. my heaters are in the sumps now but i think there is more to this.

a picture would help.

What you can do if you have no sump is get some plastic pipe and drill loads of holes in it, drop the heater in the pipe and you wont have to wurry about it again. I have two heaters in my tank this way just incase my pump in the sump fails.

It as to be the heater nothing else it can be .The mark is about 1inch be 1inch in the shape of a iron . She's eating fine so not worried just sharing that I dont think rena heater are as safe as ppl think

i would still like to see a pic of the burn.

what it could be is since i always hooked mine up to the inlet of a cannister so lots of movement on the inside to evenly heat it. since yours wasnt hooked up to anything it had to be on more and produce more heat.

or what size tank do you have it on and how many heaters do you have as that could also make it stay on more and be hotter on the outside. when used how they were made to be used i dont think they are dangerous at all.

I bought 2 but found 1 was doing the job fine but your right in the fact it will be on all the time . The tank is 6x4x2 iam going to add the other one and put them in the sump on my next tank clean...

thats a good idea i have 2 of them in my sump. one can handle it if its on 24/7 but that will wear them out fast and you wont know you have a broken heater till its too late.

i prefer to have them in sump and tank incase your return pump fails and the tank go's cold. Same with filteration best have an external filter as well as a sump :)
