So does the layout of the sponges matter (course and fine) when installed in the Rena Filstar XP series? I've always been told no but in theory I can't help wonder why since you would want the big stuff to get caught in something course and smaller stuff caught by something finer because isn't that the point? Otherwise wouldn't the finest sponge take everything?

in theory yes, the course sponges should go on the bottom with the finer ones on top.

with mine I just all course it doesn't seem to matter much. water is always crystal clear.

Yeah same here haha both tanks are well stocked. I'm running the same setup for both a single XP, aerator, a powerhead and they are both crystal clear (the one with more fish has the XP3) and the less stocked tank gets quite a bit of direct sunlight so there's a little more green on the glass. My 90 tall is the same XP3 aerator and a powerhead clean as a whistle haha
