So, I'm getting ready to move, and I'm in the process of looking for pet-friendly rental houses. Whenever I call about a property, I ask if it's pet friendly and say I have two small dogs. Is it bad etiquette to not mention that I also have two aquariums (40g and 29g) and a bird cage? I guess I'm worried I'll lose a chance on a rental if I come across as a crazy animal person.

Also, it seems to me that if a rental approves my two dogs, they shouldn't have any issues with my other pets since they're contained in cages/tanks. What do you think? What's the best thing to say when they ask me what kind of pets I have?

Thanks...

I only mention the dogs. I never mention the fish tank(s).

Being a pet lover and a former landlord. I would like to know about any aquariums 55 ga. and up. Not that it would prevent me from r4nting but I'd like to know how much wieght you intend on putting on my floors. Had a tenant double stack 2 90ga in a livingroom once. The only pet I would not let was cats. Mainly because of a tenant that appearently didn't know to change a litter box. So when it was full cats started using the carpet, which soaked through to the wood and the ordor was set. I had to replace the entire floor to completely elminate the smell.
In your case mention the dogs and not the rest unless asked. I'd not have a problem with others if it were my property.

Thank you all for your answers. I know that sometimes there's a negative stigma attached to pets, but I try to cover my bases by keeping the house very clean and getting renter's insurance. I'm going to look at two houses tomorrow... can't wait for yet another move to be over with.

yeah I have rented qutie a few times now. The first place I had restriction to one tank at 55gal and the dog (after that anything else was "crazy" to the dude, which is why I had to give up a lot of my other pets and store a few tanks at my parents). He also did house inspection (not often but the last people he rented to really destroyed the place so I kind of dont blame him) so I couldn't "sneak" anything in, so be careful. Anyways when I call I always ask if they are pet friendly and I ask about dog breeds not allowed (usually an issue for me 98% of the time untill I had the vet make me a statement that said mix without breeds listed) and offer to let them meet my pet if need be. I also show my dog is UTD on everything. I sometimes ask if fish are allowed. Usually I get "yes fish are fine"..... I dont tell them how many tanks I have or the size of the tanks, I also don't ask for a tank limit... so that way I am not breaking any rule if aquarium restrctions are not written in the lease or verbally said. The place I rent now allows "fish" (I didnt ask for aquarium restrictions on size/amount) and dogs.

^ That sucks that you had to get rid of a lot of your pets in order to live there. I'm going to see two houses tomorrow so I'll casually ask if fish are allowed. I hope they say yes...

Last house I rented asked if I had pets, I said "Yes, I have a turtle and a few fish" The owner said "No, I mean pets that mess stuff up. Like cats, dogs, an elephant?"

Funny story... My turtles and a few fish take up most of the up stairs of my house. Is the floor sagging a little a big deal? LOL:screwy:
