I have an rusty iron stand that I want to repaint. The last time I tried, I used a spray can and the stuff didn't stick well at all. I don't know if it's because I needed primer or the type of paint I used or even the spray can method. I figured this time around I could do it with roller and brush. Questions;

Do I have to use primer after I sand it down?

Has anyone painted one with roller/brush before?

If so, what kind of paint should I use?

Sorry if these seem like simple questions, but I hate doing things wrong. Id rather find out the absolute best method before trying it. Thanks again MFK!

Treat it as you would if you were going to paint a car.

Prep is the key, make sure it is clean before you put any paint- spray or brushed, if there are fingerprints left or sanding dust before you paint, it'll flake off.

There are a few different things out there for this, but the easiest to find is Duplicolor's prep spray, comes in a spray can. spray on a lint free cloth (sold at any auto parts/ refinishing supply store) and wipe it all down before applying a good primer.

If you really want it to last, but are not putting the stand next to a window (not a UV stable product) use a product called POR15 (Paint Over Rust), this stuff is an epoxy, and sticks to ANYTHING-including skin. Made to be brushed or rolled onto bare-lightly prepped/rusted metal, then painted over if exposed to sunlight. Only available from auto refinishing supply stores (like Wesco Autobody in Washington).

If that is not an option- then Rustoleum is available in cans for brushing on. This is good stuff too, and applies thick. Some guys have used this to paint cars with on a budget. Apply thick and sand too perfection!

Oh, when painting tubing and small bars, brush diagonally in a criss cross pattern-as per naval training-if it moves, oil it-if it don't paint it!

Check out the auto parts store, they sell a spray paint that claims to turn rust into primer. Then you could paint it with a roller to give a nice finish without worrying about the rust returning.
