If this is common knowledge please excuse me. I've been reading the DIY threads and am now suffering a bit from info overload.

Here's the thing. Craigslist. I traded an old bike for a tank that is at least 55 gallons. To me, the thing is huge. And, it came with everything.. so I'm quite happy with it. But... the tank was modded. It was a very tall and narrow tank. The guy who had it before me flipped it on its side and stuck the longer end into the short part. He did manage to score the glass that was now too long. But it's tempered... he couldn't cut it.

Now, I'm reading up on this and I see it needs a new panel to be safe? That the scored glass can explode? (It had a deep score he made with a glass cutter all along one side. Not to mention I just know I'll fall on it one day.) And, the top itself has no rim... it needs a rim? The seals it has are pretty good. The tank is fairly new and he did run it as is as a breeder for cory cats.

So, that panel. What should I be looking to replace it with? A rim... how sturdy does that need to be? (I'm thinking thin strips of wood.) Would any old right sized piece of tempered glass do? Can I replace it with something else (cheaper)?

I can get pictures as soon as the camera battery charges.
