I was given 2 tanks, a 125 and a 220. Both have the bottom pane of glas very broken. I know if it were the sides, a patch repair is quite simple. Are these cracks on the bottom the death-nail in the coffin?

Yes cracks on the bottom is VERY bad. Some people take a piece of glass and silicone it to the bottom, I think that that fix wouldn't work. Either replace it or like above poster use the glass for a plywood tank.

I have a 70 gallon repaired that way and it works fine but I am seriously considering doing exactly as you suggested since it currently is my only 36" long tank, rest are all 48".

Replace the pane.
