I have finally had enough of the noise coming from the Tetratec 2400 and I have a couple of options open to me. Someone an hours drive away from me is selling an Ehiem Pro 3 2080 for £100, I don't know the guy but it's listed as 11 months old and being replaced because he has a new sump and in good working order. Or I could get an FX5 new from ebay for around £160.

Which is the better filter? Which is the better deal? What would you do?

Thanks in advance,

Phil

well you can get a new fx5 for 60 pounds more. Fx5 are the best bang for your buck.

btw, how much is 160pounds in USD?
Ebay got some brand new for 220 shipped

That's about $260.

Is the FX5 quiet? If I get another noisy external the missus will start loosing patience with my hobby!

Those Tetratec filters are garbage. I had one...ugh.

Personally, I'd get the Eheim over the FX5. 11 months old is nothing for an Eheim. I've got 4 of the Pro IIs. Two are 13+ years old; two are about 4 years old. I've had to do anything to any of them. All are still running on original seals, pumps, impellers, etc.

Thanks guys, I picked up the Eheim yesterday for £100. It came with no pipes and media so that's almost another £100. DOH!

The media should arrive either tomorrow or the day after and since it will be brand new I was wondering what is the best way to perform the swap over? Should I run both filters until the new one has built up enough bio bacteria? If so how long should I run them both for?

run both for about 4 weeks to be safe.

you have a bigger tank im sure so it would be a safe bet to give it the extra time and just be sure.

Thanks, I was hoping for less than 4 weeks because the Tetra is seriously noisy, can't even sleep with the bedroom door open because it's all you can hear but I suppose it's better to be safe than sorry.

I was thinking about swapping the media but it's mainly fitted sponge and bio balls in the Tetra, I thought there might be too many gaps so I ordered the Eheim pack.

Picked the media up today and got the little beauty up and running. I set it up running on one of my big buckets first and it ran silently, I had to pull the spray bar out of the bucket to check it was working and I soaked the floor lol. Silence is golden!!!! Shame I have to leave the Tetratec on but i'm counting down the days now!
