toronto, Ontario, Canada.
180 gal tank with three eheim 2217s.
Got six juvie cichla, two are about 6", the other four are about 1.5" ( they're separated of course).
I want to replicate their native water conditions as best as possible, their tank is at about 86. Ive got peat in one filter, and driftwood in the tank. I heard oak leaves are good for their water chemistry. Any other things you guys know that will help their water conditions? I havent tested my water paramaters yet as i just set up the 180, theyre all in the 90 gal for now.

the 2 big ones are monos, not sure of the tiny ones.

sounds good so far. alightly acidic ph (7 or below) dim natural light

I believe that clean water is the best chemistry for cichlas or any fish for that matter. It might be good to replicate the wild conditions for the fish, but the problem with adding leaves, peat etc. is that it is hard to know how much is the correct amount per gallon of water or for which species of fish. Also, when to replace/replenish because measuring the useful life of what is left is impossible. Without knowing the proper amount to begin with and lifespan of the product, the water quality would be very inconsistent. I am subscribed and wanting to hear other thoughts on this though.
