So these may be dumb questions but they have been asked of me at the pet store I work at and I was stumped. So teach me to teach them.

Can I use a regular light bulb for heat if it's getting the right temp?

What's the best substrate for my beardie? I heard sand wasn't good for them.

What fish can I put with my turtle (yellow bellied slider)? [I said no fish you want to keep]

My personal question- What do you think of crushed walnut as substrate? Wouldn't that be the same as sand?

Thanks in advance for your input. I'm mostly an aquatics guy and I'm trying to master reptiles because that falls into my job description. lol. Not that I don't love reptiles, I do. I'm just more well versed in aquatics. It's mostly odd ball questions like that that I don't kow the answers to.

Technically yes, a regular house light is the same thing...but don't tell people! Convince them that 14.99 Repti-bulb is way better... :P Actually, some of the reptile bulbs have special properties, colours, etc. UV bulbs are a different story though...need UVC producing reptile ones.

Meh, I've used sand, but you've gotta be careful with little guys and impaction.

Correct, fish will get 'et.

Never tried the walnut stuff myself...

THanks I've seen some people put turtles in with fish double the size and it went fine. didn't know if it was just a fluke or not.

Anyone else have anything to say about the walnut?

Yes you can if you combine it with a uv ligth for the reptiles that need it. I dont like however bulbs for leo geckos because they avoid brigth ligths, heat pad its better

My teory: young and sick animals: kitchen paper. Healty adults: play sand

Big turtle in a pond: comon goldfish, sun fish and a few others. Aquarium: none

Crushed walnut its a substrate that in my opinion should be baned from the herp trade as it creates much more harm then good alongside corn knops. LIKE corn knops it will easy cause a deadly inpactacion that will kill most animals. Its sharp edges injure animals inside and out. Besides if it wasnt enough wallnut its actualy one of the trees (and all of its parts, fruits ,leafs, etc) that its TOXIC to reptiles and amphibians:nilly:The toxicity doesant kill rigth away, but it constantly stresses liver and kidney and can cause unrepairable damage. DONT USE IT

Most "thingamagic" thouse bulbs do are not worth it:grinno: Also what you want is uvb and uva...Uvc radiacion its extremely dangerous for both animals and humans as it causes very serious damage to the cells

True
Correct, fish will get 'et.
So trully true
Never tried the walnut stuff myself...
Glad you didnt

I agreee with Coura...crushed walnut is a HUGE no-no. I keep my beardie on textured lineoleum tile that is permanently siliconed to the bottom of the enclosure. It is extremely easy to clean and has no spots for bacteria to hang out since all the joints are siliconed. Plus there is absolutely no chance for impaction and it looks great! If you do go this route, just be sure to let the enclosure air-out for AT LEAST a week to get rid of any potentially harmful fumes from the silicone.
