I had talked about doing it before and I finally started a small rescue for reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. I'm sticking with a very small operation for right now, working with a few different co-workers, friends, breeders and rehabilitators.
So far, I've set up a fairly wide variety of fosters, so amongst us all there's really nothing that can be left in our care that we can't handle or provide care for. I have two exotics vets, one I work with regularly (she's also the vet who handles my store animals care) and one who works primarily with more uncommon exotics (he works at the local zoo). I've started networking with some of the shelters and rescues I used to work at and with when I was at other stores, which primarily dealt with cats & dogs only but still occasionally hear about people looking to surrender or adopt exotics.
I'm still working on the rescue's webpage, but FB and Craiglist have been wonderful tools lately. We've found quite a few animals great homes, including one large Burm who I thought I'd be stuck with forever, haha. But he's now in NY living in the coolest custom enclosure I've seen outside of a zoo (well, outside of a zoo and Lep's Caiman enclosure lol). But yea... so hopefully this all goes well and I can expand this beyond what I'm currently doing and capable of. But for now, I'm pleased.
Check it out on FB, especially if you're in the NJ/NY/PA, maybe there's something you can adopt in the near future!
