So a co worker is having less time to take care of his fish, so He told me I could get his two "Blue FH" he said they are not doing so hot and need a home. So I don't know what is wrong with them yet if anything. They are 4" right now he said, He is keeping them in a divided 55 gallon. I have 1 empty 55 and one empty 29 gallon bio-cube right now. I will start keeping an eye out on CL for another cheap 55 so I can eventually have them each in a 55.

Can you guys give me any more tips for a first time FH owner. I really wanted his Platinum FH but he is selling that one since its so nice.

buy the nice one from him if you like it so much. since he's your friend, he'll maybe sell it to you cheaper.

They have awesome personalities and are all beautiful fish. Your probably getting thai silk or red dragon x thai silk( i have both, awesome fish). They have a pretty fast growth rate and can be a challenge to breed sometimes( at least i think). In my experience they like warmer water, upper 80's. Good luck with your flowerhorn!

A 55 gallon will not be suitable long term for a mature FH.

yea, look for a 75 gal on craigslist, still a 4 foot tank. should still be around $100.

Oh I didn't know they got that big, so I really need to be on the look out for two 75 gallons then? How big do they normally get, I appologize I haven't done much research normally I do a lot before getting something new, but this kinda just fell in my lap.

Adult sizes will vary, but overall think along the lines of a midas or red devil.
Big thick fish, with the potential for some males to reach 12-15" when fully mature.

Midas are thick, not Red Devils. And whats being cranked out nowadays probably won't push past 12".

I wasn't referring to pure Amphilophus Citrinellus or pure Amphilophus labiatus, hence the reason for using common names such as midas & red devil. With the vast majority of those fish in the trade being crosses, the vast majority have the potential to be big thick fish. Is that better?

Also, even at 12", a 55 gallon is a poor choice for most adult FH. Runts & short body FH excluded.
