So I found a 5" black piranha for sale on kijiji with a fish tank it's living in 29g!! So I have a 40g breeder tank and eventually will have my 90g as a mmore permanent home so my questions are
1) can I keep it in a 40g for the time being
2) will the 90g be big enough for a permant home?
thanks for replys

The 90 gallon won't be big enough as I have a black arowana at the moment that is at least 30" long and is living in a 520 gallon tank. The 40 gallon is okay for a very short period but you would need at least or over a 230 gallon tank for permanent.

You don't need a 230gallon for a solo piranha. a 90 gallon will be fine as a perm home for quite a while. might have to up the tank if he turns into a 16"+ monster though. but that won't be for a long time.

A 5" rhom wont ever hit 16". Realistically maybe 8-12" and a 90 is more then adequate and at 5" a 40b will be fine for a few years seeing as how much growth slows at 4-6"! You'll see about an inch per year!

Warm water (80-82°), clean water (low nitrates), high water flow (big filters and powerheads) and a good varied diet of pellets and fish fillets will help growth!

To get a 12"+ rhombeus you need to buy it wild caught. But IMO growing them out is way funner, so enjoy it!

I agree it won't hit 16 inches... Smaller rhoms won't get much bigger then 12 in captivity temp 78ish once you hit 80 it cuts out oxygen for the fish
