Rescue turtles

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks great! What do you do with them in the winter months?
Thanks.
They stay out all year. The pond is over 4 feet deep with a thick layer of mud on the bottom. The turtles dig down and stay deep in the winter.
The pump is lifted to a higher shelf in the pond to keep bacteria alive and the deeper water warmer.
The garden is very sheltered too which also helps.
Turtles are becoming a very common sight in British waters and are becoming a bit of a problem. This is due to stupid owners dumping them in rivers and canals.
Red eared sliders, yellow belly sliders some species of map turtle and certain cooters all do well year round in the uk. A deep enough pond is required though.

The pond looks so inviting.
Will the turtles hangout with you if you sit out there?
Thanks.
Yes most of them. Some actually follow me about in hope of food.
I do have a couple that are shy and dive in when I approach. In time I expect they will all become quite tame.

That’s awesome!
Agreed.I have been wanting to set up an outdoor turtle enclosure similar to yours.I did have a small pond with terrapins years ago but the racoons killed them all.

No raccoons here in the UK to worry about, just herons. I've lost a few fish to herons, yet to see them take a turtle though.
