Ended up going to petsmart today to just grab some fish food. Never been into Oscar’s. Usually never buy anything from there but was in need of food. Anyways, I passed by the tanks and my heart just dropped and felt terrible for this little guy and couldn’t help myself from not saving him from a slow and crappy death that was sure to happen to him in that tank. Full of ich and fungus, with a dead Oscar full of fluffy fungus, I told the sales rep I’ll save him if I can have him half off so they allowed it. He will be getting his own tank and I will document and share a video of his progress. I think I’ll name him franky.

Well-meaning customer: "Look at this! I just rescued this poor fish from a chain store, and got him for half price to boot!"

Chain-store merchandiser: "Tropical fish are awesome! Even half dead, they still don't need to be written off; somebody will still pay money! Quick, order another 3 dozen Oscars! We'll dump them in with the feeder goldfish when they come in..."

You are a good-hearted soul, but you are merely encouraging those Fish Auschwitz places to bring in more fish for more neglect and abuse.

Unfortunately, I agree. Buying from a LFS is not a 'rescue'.

It won't matter if someone buys a neglected fish or don't from a big box lfs because the top executives don't care about fish. They know people buy fish for pets so every dollar counts. I saved a fish from the brink of death myself so great save imo.
