i saw this guy at my lfs. its a little over 2" and it had taken a lot of damage and most of its dorsal fin had been chewed off. i put it in a 60g with a school of danios. it has been over a week. its still very shy. all the fins have healed nicely except the dorsal fin. i attached some pics to show the damage. you guys think the dorsal fin will grow back? and is it male or female? thanks in advance

That's okay. I only did it as a rescue. I figured it would have a better life with me than getting killed at the lfs. A mayan is still an interesting fish. But what about the dorsal fin? Is it ever going to grow back?

That is very cool of you. The dorsal will heal in time. Do lots of water changes.

Thanks for the replies. I really do hope it comes back. Are your mayans picky eaters? So far, even without its fin, it manage to pick off all the danios, except for one lucky one, but not many pellets

Mayan's are not picky eaters , but in your case he had the option of live food , so he would not have preferred the pellets.
Shortly when he does not have any more to hunt and eat , he will pellet.
As suggested , water changes and variety diet will nurse him back to good health....Good Luck
