I'm resealing a 180. The tank is not leaking but the silicone on the sides (vertical) were in bad shape. The silicon on the bottom is still in great shape. I've already striped and cleaned the sides.

My Question:
Can I reseal just the vertical sides and not the bottom? Or does the entire inside need to be done?

One reason for concern is I was given advise that on a tank that size you have to break it down and do a complete between the glass reseal or it wont hold. This makes me afraid to strip the seal on the bottom since it's in good shape. Please share your experience. Thanks.

Danger,

Hey bro... I wish i had taken some pics of the re-seal i did on that 220. You saw the pics before... So what i did was take all old silcone out with a few (like 10) razorblades. (note: do not touch the stuff that has bonded between the two pieces of glass).. Then i used rubbing alcohol to clean the areas where the old sicone was VERY WELL.... Then i made sure there was no left over silicone (Note: dont us gloves for this use your bare hand) by using a bucket of water dipping my hand in and running my hand around where the old silicone was.. (if there is any there just simply use the razor blade and remove it)... Now let everything dry up for a few hours (you can help it by using towels and fans).. Then just cut the silicone tip about half way up... Then put a smooth not to thick bead along all the seams and at the corners dont be affraid to use a bit more.. The bead will be raised up like a hill top at first... but when i looks like a quarter-pipe (for you skaters out there) then you know it has bonded with the glass and has made a good seal... You have my number... I would be more that happy to come up and give you a hand (after you have removed the silicone hehehehe nah jk) let me know.. This will take a few hours just to remove the silicone and then about and hour or so for clean up and prep, then about 2 mins to lay the bead...

In order to reseal, you would start with one of these

and then get one of these

Ok, so I've got nothing...

By the way, I second the motion not to strip the silicone from between the glass. I did a thread a while ago and found that new silicone bonds well with old silicone. Therefor, you don't need to do the bottom. Just make sure you clean the bottom silicone with alcohol too before adding the new seal (no more seal pictures, I promise).

spend the extra hour and strip the whole thing.(not between the glass)
start fresh, its not that much more work.Cheap insurance against 180g on the floor.
