It's my first time resealing an aquarium. I've got the razor blades, GE I silicone and caulking gun.

The aquarium to be resealed is a 55g. The previous owners informed me that it leaked. The top center brace is also broken, so I will be replacing the frames in addition to resealing. The tank came with a really nice stand & canopy for $60, so I figured "why not reseal it?"

I was reading this article (http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/management/Spinelli_Resealing_Aquarium.html) and had but one question:

Should I or should I not remove the silicone that joins the pieces of glass together? I know I need to remove and replace the silicone on the inner surface of the aquarium. However, the article specifically says "be careful not to cut into the joint between the two panels". I just want a second opinion/some guidance.

I will be handing the resealed aquarium off to a family member and do not want to receive a frantic phone call about the aquarium leaking onto the kitchen floor.

Thanks all.

Dont take out the structural silicone. The only time you would even think about doing this, maybe, is if the tank is a billion years old, maybe. Also, dont forget rubbing alcohol to clean the surface before applying the new silicone. Also, you can use painters tape and a spoon for good results. Dont forget, you can use black silicone. has a sexy look to it.

hi, i have the same question, but its still not answered!!! why not remove it? and if u do, what is proper procedure to replace it. ???

You dont remove it (the silicone between the glass pieces), because you dont need to. It's a little 55 gallon tank. There's not going to be much of a problem in that area. The only problem you get with tanks that size is leaking.

If you do remove it, the proper procedure to replace it is to clean it all with rubbing alcohol and silicone it all back together.
