Hey everyone,

I lurk a lot, but have never seen this question adressed.

I know it's said that silicone won't stick to plastic or silicone, but what do you do about resealing a tank with a plastic overflow?

Background:

I recently bought a used 75 g tank, predrilled and overflow. It's definately on the old side - it has a wide piece of glass for a center brace. Most of the seams look in tolerable condition, but the seam on the overflow looks pretty flakey to me. In fact, I was just poking it to check for quality, and found a bubble of water underneath the outside part of the seam. I know the tank was holding water before, so I'm not entirely sure I'll try to redo the seals, but if I do, is there anything special needed to properly seal the corner where plastic meets glass?

There is also a crack in the plastic that was smeared with silicone as a repair.

Any thoughts on how desperately a reseal is needed? It looks doable, but I've never done anything like that before so I'm not sure I want to bother if I don't have to.

Thanks for all your wisdom,

Rose

A piece of acrylic and acrylic cement will do the job much better than silicone.

I'm afraid I don't understand. Are you recommending acrylic cement for the entire tank, or just the one joint? The plastic (acrylic? I have no idea what exactl material it is) overflow is already there, I just want to know how to make good seals around it if I do redo them at all - and it seems like you're suggesting what material to use for making one, which I won't be doing.
