quick question quick thread. Is General Electric silicone type 1 a good silicone to use to reseal a 125g. Ive read this was safe and started to use it but noticed really strong fumes from the silicone. Is this silicone non toxic?
Again its General electric Silicone type 1

silicone has a strong smell to it. When I did my sump I had to cover my nose with my shirt, and it stunk up my kitchen until it cured. Yeah GE I is what you want. As long as there is no mold inhibitors in it and it is 100% silicone. The GE II has the mold inhibitors in it and I have read in numerous places that in will leak into the tank and kill off the fish.

Ok Yeah its def type 1 so In short its alright?

Yep, be sure to do it in a well vented area. I got really light headed at one point being bent over the side of my 150 when I re-sealed it. Also, be sure to do it all at once. You don't want to start and stop. New silicone doesn't adhere well to old silicone.

That is not the correct type of silicon to use. GE 1 is a sealent, not an adhesive. It would only be a matter of time until your tank leaked or blew out a side. Many people will tell you that its OK to use, however many people have also never researched it in depth.

What you want to use is RTV 108 or RTV 103. 108 is clear, 103 is black. Best place to buy it is from Granger. When you start the project, be sure to get all of the old silicon off. The new stuff wont stick to the old stuff.

you are right that RVT 108 is an adhesive silicone but the question was :

(Reseal a 125)

For resealing GE 1 Is fine. And it also work well for building smaller tanks I have tanks that are several years old now built with GE 1 and they are still holding. I would not build larger tanks with it but for resealing I would say it is okay.

If you are going to dissemble a tank and rebuild it then yes I would go for the RVT108 It would be worth the extra money for the added security. But if your tank just has a leak and is other wise strong then resealing it would be in order. You would not have to completely take the tank apart, You would just remove the inner seam and reseal. In this case GE1 would be okay.
