I think hormones would be kind of tough too.

Maybe duanes is onto something. Or a look at filtration methods and nitrate removal. Definitely allot of variables but id imagine they can be somewhat controlled.

Canister filter and how much they contribute to nitrate if not maintained at x intervals would be another one.

What about growth rates based on different foods? That would be measurable. You could change up other variables too if you wanted to see how growth was effected.

How about a simple test of if fry grow faster/bigger in a larger tank as compared to a smaller tank assuming water change done at same amount of nitrates?
