"I bought this cute little fishy"," I'm not sure what it is but it swims fast,""Can someone please id it?"
"I rescued this rtc, can i put it in with my crayfish? (meant for drama)....

People, please research before you buy/adopt/rescue fish/inverts/reptiles or any animal. Without proper research you dont know the needs of these fish/animals that you think are "soooo pretty, i have to have it" or " I can take that pretty orange/black fish(Oscar) from you and put it in my 10g, i will feed it 10 times a day and love it and kiss it and hug it."

Please, all your doing is creating a mess for yourself and your pet.It is very noble to rescue animals, IF you have the means and know exactly what you have and can help...not create another problem.. Its very simple to google anything and i mean ANYTHING to find out information before you buy/adopt/rescue.
There are to many irresponsible ppl buying/adopting animals that they simply cant take care of. Alot of these animals end up as invasive species or mistreated because of lack of knowledge on how to properly care for them.
It is a crime to not properly treat your dog/cat for an ilness. To not give them proper shelter/food/water. This crime is called "Animal Cruelty".
Buying a pacu and putting it in a 50g tank is "Animal cruelty". Not keeping your tank/reptile enclosure as clean as you can, is"Animal Cruelty""Nasty algae covered glass and stinking water is" Animal Cruelty".

PLEASE, be responsible and research before you buy/adopt/rescue. If your not willing to give your pets 100% then DONT get them...

I agree, but the problem is 99% of the people who buy their first fish don't know what they are getting into since most of the time its an impulse buy of some sort (coz of their kids etc), or they are going on what the store employee tells them thinking they know best (which is understandable for some one who doesn't know any better)...

So although its easy to say research first, most people new to the hobby don't till its too late or realized they've been given bad info... i know i made that mistake when i first started out keeping fish...

AMEN BRO AMEN!! ;)

I agree with doing research first, Don't trust petstores until you know that you can. I admittedly was suckered into getting a pacu back when I first started housing fish because I was told they would be fine in a 55g. I now will ask lfs employees questions I know the answers to in order to know if the employees can be trusted.

Although I also agree with it being animal cruelty when aquatic life is mistreated/ uncared for ,but good luck with ever getting that to stick, at least around here.
I had a local law enforcement officer in the animal control division come to my house about 8 months ago because of an anonymous complaint that my dogs where being starved and living caged in their on waste. I didn't have any dogs and told the officer that all I have are fish and that he was more than welcome to check on them. He said no we aren't worried about fish, apologized to the interruption and left.

As far as rescuing goes, once again I agree. If you cannot properly care for the fish then do not get them. "rescuing" that oscar from his 10g home to keep him in your 29g is not rescue, it's more like a prison transfer. The only reason I would say it is ok to do something like that is if the fish is 100% going to be killed or released so you take it temporarily until finding it the proper home. I do a lot of rescues in the eastern part of my state and have in fact bought most of my tanks because I was doing a rescue. I think only 3 of my fish are actual lfs purchases and the rest were me responding to "come get this fish before I cook it" type ads. I'm even working on 2 8'x8'x4' ply builds to house the big boys in. My point is, unless you have the resources, financial and/or networking connections, don't "save' these fish.

sorry to be so long winded but I'm a marine bio major and aquatic life is my passion

I do resurch but ask questions here because experiance trumps general info every time.

I agree!

Nice thoughts, but if someone is reading threads on MFK I think it's safe to assume they are doing a little research. You'd be better off printing out your post and going to Petco and stapling it to the foreheads of people looking at the fish displays with a 10g tank and Spongebob ornaments in their shopping cart.

I have a personal rule. I always spend a day reading up on a species before moving ahead with the purchase unless it's closely related to a fish I already know a lot about. So I wouldn't buy a tetra on a whim, since I know little about teeny, pointless fish. But if I see a large doradid, I don't really need to think about it because their care is pretty much always the same and most prove to be very hardy. So if you know a lot about the basics and are already familiar with the family, there's little harm in snatching up an individual that you might not have specifics on as long as you are prepared to accommodate it. But for fish you are completely in the dark on, yeah. Write down the name and google the carp out of it.

These are some of the reasons as to why I started the fish rescue Fish Sanctuary around here. People buy Oscars because they look "cool", and then don't realize their true size, and can't care them anymore. Sometimes they are kept in 10-20 Gallons, and the case with "Bruce" was that he was kept in very poor water quality, which does explain his HITH, which is healing nicely.
And that's just one example of what I have come across on a rescue. :nilly:
