a lfs near me is selling a tiny blue ring octopuss. i was wondering shouldnt there be licenses and permits to own this thing. even with venemous snakes u need permits and they might not kill u if u get bit. there is still a chance to live. Would anyone here buy it if they could?

I personally believe it's one of those sea creatures that best belongs in the care of experts. Even seasoned aquarium keepers should think twice about even considering it. Too risky if you ask me.

one bit of the octo and ur dead. so bottom line is too risky.

There are lots of people who keep these. Sure it has risks, but as long as your hands are never in the tank and you have a tight lid how is it going to be a problem? Though personally I don't think Octos are worth it period... toxic or not, as the mini ones have super short life spans, and cost a fortune... so whats the point? Also you have to be "bitten" by it to be poisoned, though the bites can be tiny/painless... SO if you ever get one, wear heavy gloves if you ever need to put your hands in the tank.

x2.

If you're up for it and know what you're doing (as in have had an octopus before), then I don't see why not. You can survive a bit provided that you get to the hospital ASAP and have someone assisting with your breathing for a long time (at least a few hours). Set up a bit protocol as if you're working with a venomous snake, and only do stuff with the aquarium when someone else is around, preferably in the same room.

There are already too many permits needed in this world. The store should just mark the tank venomous

Thing is most likey its not going to be the expert responsible fish keeper that buys it. same thing happens withreptiles that require expert level. its always the guy that wants to say oh i own this that ends buying it. and in the middle of a bad*** demonstration to his friend gets bit. im pro permits and licenses at expensive cost because while the experienced fish/reptile keeper is angry cause he has to jump through hoops to get something they want it will also prevent the idiot who saved up just enough money to get the deadly animal or exotic pet.

I'm anti-permit and pro-evolution & pro-common sense. If someone decides to be "cool" and do something dumb with a dangerous animal, then they get what they deserve (plus what they should have expected); now if someone else gets hurt/killed as a result of another person's stupidity, then I get concerned but that's about it.
