Well after finally settling down in a house Im starting a 120 gal glass tank back up for cichlids. I used to keep a somewhat predator based tank with an odoe pike, Redtail cat, and oscars, those went away when I moved.

This time around its the wifes choice on what goes in and she has a decent list of cichlids she would like for a community attempt. Only say so I get was demanded a frontosa :headbang2

Anyway got a few questions regarding substrate, the tank currently has you everyday black gravel in it. But if I remember correctly cichlids do better with some sand?

Also debating on new filters, I currently have four penquin 60 hanging on the back which are annoying for their sound and not exactly appealing to look at. Was leaning towards the Eheim 2217 classic cannister as a replacement for them along with keeping some powerheads in tank. Then I did some reading on the board and found a huge fan base for fx5. Granted its alot more of a filter than I need and more money. Will the 2217 do the job with a somewhat heavily populated 120? If not I have been told the fx5 doesnt come with filter media and you need to mix and match different components. What is your opinion on what to use in the fx5.

Will have to post her list of selections to see what can coexist with what so I dont spend money on fish for them to turn into the feed for others.

Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

just fill your fx5 with bio media... all you need..

I'm asking the same question... I also got a 120gl 5' tank, and it came damaged.. So, while they're replacing it, I still could change to a corner flow with a wet/dry filter. It will cost me another $300, over the the normal tank and an fx5. Not sure if it's worth it..

use bio max.... eheim substrate pro... seachem matrix what ever one you want... all do the same thing...:)

Hey...!

Congrats on getting settled in a place where you can restart your tank...!!!

Here is a link, http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=229441

to a thread that you may find interesting... It's about Africans and rocks and also substrate.

As for the gravel you have... NEVER, IMHO, use old gravel!! To me.... it's NOT a good idea.... just get some new stuff even it is the exact same type...

That being said... I prefer, and I know that I am in the minority on this... no gravel, sand etc... I have been removing mine every chance I get... When I redo my 2 tanks in the near future, (Sorry... I know you guys must be sick of hearing me say this over and over lately...!) I will have a bottom of chucks 3-4-5" of tufa - TXHR, no pleco, and nice algae growing everywhere... the fry will love it...!!!!!

Check out the thread... and good luck...!

Best,

mm
