I used to keep freshwater tanks as a youngster (mostly cichlids), but it has been about 10 years since I have been able to finally get back in to it. I have always dreamed of keeping a large saltwater setup and I think now is the time. I am finishing my basement myself and have the room to do an in-wall aquarium with access behind from a storage room. I have been looking on craigslist for 180+ setups but don't know for sure what I will need. I think I will start with fish only (no reef) so I can start slow. I have visited my local aquatics store and they tell me that I need much less than a full setup to get started. What exactly should I get to start? What is a good price for the setup I need? Thanks to anyone who has experience and can help out. I can't wait to get started.

Wow, I'm jealous - should be a great project. I know nothing of saltwater but your plans are intriging. So you'll have a 'service room' behind a your tank. If the plumbing is there, are you considering automatic top-off?

how about the whole basement transformed into a tank???

I need the rest of the basement for a bedroom and a theatre... but the whole basement aquarium sounds interesting.
