Sometimes I have to shut off my pump (a pond pump) to do some tank maintenance. When I turn it back on it gives a little rush of water through the filter and out comes a cloud of stuff from inside the filter. Then it takes it a day or longer to clear it up. My filter is a DIY with scrubbies and then regular floss. What can be done to prevent the rush of accumulated stuff?

Can't help you with your question, but..

If you know its going to happen whenever you restart it, is the output in a spot where you can place a bucket underneath to catch the first rush of filth that comes out?

Clean the inside of the filter out, or use a fish net to catch it, or like the other guy said put it in a bucket.

Or for a truly elagant and lazy way, put valves and a T on so you can divert your water flow to your nearest planting bed or just somewhere in the lawn. Maybe $10-$15 for a nice system that could also be used for a continuous water change system (if a float valve is used for filling).
