When I got my new large canister filter recently it didn't cause much surface water motion like my older collection of filters did and my fish seemed to be gasping more. I returned my old Marineland HOB to its rightful place with only polyfloss in it to add a nice waterfall which does seem to have helped considerably.

i’ve only got fluval / marineland canisters - zero surface agitation - use hob’s / air stones / power heads..

GL!

I built a spray bar for a used fx5 that didn't come with hoses. Cost less than $10 including black krylon and provides much better surface agitation than a nozzle outlet. With 2 powerheads placed underneath it has achieved a gyre effect in an 8ft tank, where a solid sheet of water flows across the top and hits the other side to circulate the opposite direction along the substrate. This is aided by a 2nd 600gph canister outlet pointing straight down and an ac110 + ac70 placed on the opposite side of the spray bar to push water downward.IMG_20200531_225843.jpg

One of the places where canister filters always seem lacking is oxygenating the water... especially if you don't use a spray bar. Kudo's for adding extra surface agitation!

There's actually a spraybar attachment that came with my AquaTop canister I may also add to the tank. I don' know, just looked like kind of a pain in the ass but might be worth a try to add even more agitation.

It probably just snaps together you should try it. Here's a few short videos comparing the spray bar to a 660gph canister with downward outlet.

I couldn't figure out why my flowerhorn was hanging out in the front corner of his 55. He wouldn't leave it. When he pouts he goes in his cave and gives me dirty looks so I tested the water, examined him stem to stern and all seemed well. I was perplexed until I realized I let the water level drop to a point where the waterfall from the hob filter was combining with the bubbler and then the wave maker towards the front of the tank. The water was forming mini whirlpools that would curl halfway down the water column and Elvis was enjoying the tickling sensation or something. Weird.
