I have a 5-6" delhezi and a ~5" ornate. Both seem to be retaining their external gills. There are only traces, barely visible on the delhezi, but they are there. On the ornate they are still slightly larger than on the delhezi. Both seem to have not lost any of their external gills since I got them (pencil thick for the ornate, medium thick 3" for the delhezi). Any reasons why?

Gill retention can be affected by a couple of factors including genetics, water conditions, tankmates or lack thereof. In fact external(pinate) gills have been known ro regrow on some bichirs.-Anne
Personaly I feel it has to do with excellent water conditions

That may be the case with the delhezi. I did not notice them when I got him. I assumed I just missed them, but it looks like he got them back. So it may be a sign of high water quality?

yup I aquired 2 del and an endi all three regrew their external gills to one extentor another they do not generally regrow to thier original size

I think it might have something to do with well oxygenated water. My dels and ornate have kept theirs long past the sizes when my others lost them.

Every once in a while, I'll notice one has been nipped off, only to come right back.

Sounds good. They are in a 150 with a Fluval FX5, massive water changes, and a very strong air pump, so it makes sense.

From what I remember of pics of them with full gills, they look like legless axolotls (I have 4 axolotls).
