I'm new to rays but I thought rays were super active? Mine kinda just chills unless there is food in the tank or the lights are off for awhile. Water parameters are perfect on 2 tests. I watch my tank a lot late night 2-4am. The only tankmate that is even curious about him is is my tire track eel. Any thoughts?

how long have you had them? they can take a while to adjust to a new tank.
mine can be extremely active or very stationary, sometimes they will just chill. it's not really unusual. they can also be a little more reserved if not in a group setting. rays tend to bring out the social aspect in other rays.

what's your tank like? is there much space for the ray, or is it quite crowded?

He is about a 4 inch disk in a 75 gallon. I'm upgrading this summer to either a 125(6x1.5xsomething) or a 120 (4x2x2) not sure what would be best. I've had him/her for only a few days, so I'm sure that could be the problem. I just hear so much about how sensitive rays are I don't want to lose him so soon. I only have one piece of driftwood that is in the middle of the tank. He has plenty of space for the size that he is.

wider is better, i would see about getting a pond or custom tank. retics (magdalanae at least) have quite long tails. mine is currently sitting at 20+ inches nose to tail and growing still.
you'll also want more water volume as it'll produce way more biowaste than you could expect. i would be thinking a 200+gal water volume, whether it's a tank and sump or something like that.
if only a few days in the tank and not with other rays, he's most likely stressed, wary of his surroundings/tankmates and not settled in yet.

I'm not sure, im already hand feeding freeze dried krill, and his scratch is healing (was there when I bought him). Time will tell i suppose. So go with either a 120 or 180? I was browsing threads and someone posted theirs only grew an inch in disc diameter over 3 and 1/2 months. How fast has yours grown?

Give it some time. Mine stayed buried in the sand for several days after I got them only coming out for food. Now they are pretty active most of the day. I originally had one but once I got another and it got acclimated, they both were more active.

they went from 3 inches disc to 7 inches within 9 months. they are sitting at the 10 inch mark currently after almost 3 yrs. it's slowed down but they still grow, just a much slower pace.
