My new tank (600 gallon) is going to be setup as peninsula style ( viewable from the 2 long sides with overflow on one end of the tank) so running a PVC for return line along the 2 long sides is out of the question.

I really don't want to have a PVC coming straight up from the bottom of the tank in the middle of the tank either..

How does having your return line run from the bottom of the tank instead running the side over the rim affect the head loss ? or does it at all ?

The part circled in red is the are in question..

thanks

It will be the same, but make sure you run the pipe all the way to the top so you don't drain the entire tank when power fails.

Nevermind,....I see a potential problem with 600 gallon of water on the floor incase of power outage..lol

technically a check valve would stop it, but that would be a gamble. Even at that, the more I think about it the more I would say it would reduce your flow because of the pressure at the bottom.
Have you considered 4 small returns (1 in each corner)?

Well, I'll be running 2 little giant pump from the sump and the ultima filter into the tank.

Rather than running it from the bottom, I can run it from the overflow side of the tank near the top and run a manifold (1" PVC) through the top rim to the other side of tank to spread the flow..with loc-line outlets

The sump is basically used to store heaters, probe and other equipment as well as refugium / grow out section. The sump also serve as a way to add more flow in the tank with the least number of pwerhead as possible.

The filtration will be handle strictly with the ultima filter(s)

PS: check valve fails, i hate to leave my faith on 2 things that are not a matter of IF they're going to happen, but rather WHEN they are going to happen. Power and Check Valve Failure.

You're very wise:)

Keep all of your plumbing on the same end. And ignore everything you ever read about dead spots. One of my cleanest tanks ever was when the overflow and return were on the same end. It may not make sense at first, but when you see it in operation you will wonder why more people don't run their tanks like that.

I've noticed that as well. It seems to swirl the crap on top of the return flow and into the overflow.
