A few years back tragedy struck while on vacation and the 200 gallon tank housing Paretroplus dambabe broke, completely emptying its contents. Luckily I had juvenile dambabe growing. It would take over 2 years for these young ones to engage in nature’s mandate to reproduce.
Paretroplus dambabe, know in malagasy as the red fish, is native on Madagascar’s lake Kinkony. At last survey it’s population was severely reduced and nearly extirpated. No new surveys have been conducted in several year so it’s unclear if it still persists though there are attempts to reintroduce it from captive stocks.
I share with you this short video of one of my most favorite damba. Hope it can trigger your curiosity to also maintain one of the most enigmatic fish I know.
