Have a 250 gallon tank with 2 drilled overflow boxes in each corner. Each overflow goes through 3/4" PVC pipes down to my 55 gallon sump. Now the return compartment where the pump is will contain roughly 6 gallons on water (14"W 12"L 8"H). I will also have an FX5 running as well. I was thinking of picking up a Mag 12. Do you think that pump is to strong or to weak?

It all really depends on how much water movement do you want in the sump, and how much water movement is already in your main tank. Oh, and how low the sump sits from the main tank, because that negates the gph ratings on the return pump etc.

If it's bioballs and freshwater definitely go with a Mag 9 or 12. Since I would assume you do not have a lot of water movement in the main tank via powerheads. You will not need anything over a Mag 12.
