Hi, I'm thinking about upgrading my rio 1400 with a larger submersible pump. I'm looking for an affordable $50-$100 pump that would output 500-600gph @6ft head. Any suggestions? I was thinking a Mag 7, but it's a little low on GPH. But a Mag 9.5 would be to much for my overflow to handle. There doesn't seem to be anything in between?

It's a 1-1,1/4 overflow pipe. Not durso though. I contacted the manufacturer of the overflow. They said it's rated for 600gph, but they recomended I get get a 600gph @6ft pump Minimum. Kinda odd the way they worded it.

I would anticipate they rate that flow rate low to protect from "oh crap I flooded my apartment and now i'm being sued by my landlord and it's all your fault so i'm suing you" type of thing.

I would get the mag9, and just put a ball-valve on the pump output to reduce flow if necessary.

Update: I ended up getting a mag 9.5 used for a good price. Hooked it up, and running full blast it's still not as much as that overflow can handle. It's actually a little noisy do to slow water flow. I bet a mag 12 would have been perfect. But for a 60 gallon tank, this should do fine for now. Thanks for your input.

I hate that I didn't see this thread earlier. I just built a new sump and got rid of the Mag 7 I've been running for the past two years. In the past week I've went through a Mag 12, 9, and 5 trying to find quiet. My last buy was a Laguna and I will never buy another Mag again. I got the one with the Fountain Pump Kit so there's a restricting valve built in.

+1 on Laguna. I wanted a bigger pump to replace my eheim compact 5000 and went with Laguna 9000 which gives me 7500 lph or a little under 2000 gph at y foot head. Good value, quiet robust pump. Only downside was that as a pond pump, once the external cage was removed there was no stand to hold it upright. Was easy to wedge it in place with foam though. A smaller model would suit your needs im sure.

+2 on Laguna max-flo pumps. Replaced my mag with one. It's a lot more quieter and much more efficient then a comparable mag.
